Siendo una parada obligada dentro de la ruta, era necesario preparar un sistema de defensa con el fin de garantizar la seguridad de los habitantes de la ciudad y el tr\u00e1fico de galeones, lo que dio lugar a uno de los conjunto m\u00e1s impresionante de la arquitectura militar en Am\u00e9rica. UNESCO, declaro el puerto y la fortificaciones de Portobelo Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1980, reconociendo el car\u00e1cter excepcional de esta ciudad construida a orillas del mar Caribe.<\/p>\n<p
